Aga Khan Health Board

Grow Your Health Green

ESF 2017 is an opportunity to take ownership of and look after your health. In conjunction with the Aga Khan Health Board, ESF will provide a variety of programmes across the weekend to help you learn more about your health and how to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Diabetes and Cholesterol Screening Programme

East Midlands Conference Centre
Friday & Sunday 10am-6pm

The Aga Khan Health Board will hold a screening programme measuring individuals’ blood pressure and body mass index, providing personalised consultations looking at risk factors for developing heart disease and diabetes.

Higher risk individuals will be offered point of care testing measuring HbA1c and total cholesterol levels. The results of these tests will be discussed with individuals and personalised management plans will be formulated.

Bone Marrow Recruitment Drive

East Midlands Conference Centre
Saturday 9am-6pm, 7:30pm-9pm

Did you know, if you are Caucasian and need a bone marrow transplant, you have a 75% chance of finding a matching donor in the UK?

If you are Asian, your chances drop to as low as 25%.

Leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma, other blood disorders — these diseases require a bone marrow transplant, and do not differentiate between Caucasians and Asians.

The Aga Khan Health Board will run a bone marrow recruitment drive, signing individuals up to the National Bone Marrow Register. If you are between 16 and 30 and in good health, pop in for a chat to learn more about what bone marrow donation involves and what exactly it means for you and for those you will be donating to. Individuals who have received and donated bone marrow will be present to share their experiences.

David Ross Sports Hall, Studio 2
Saturday 2pm-3:30pm

Did you know that paying more attention to the present moment — to your own thoughts and feelings, and to the world around you — can improve your mental wellbeing?

Join the Aga Khan Health Board for one of the taster sessions being held across the weekend, learning about Mindfulness and practising techniques to improve your mental wellbeing.

Emotional Wellness Workshops

David Ross Sports Hall, Studio 2
Saturday 3:30pm-5:30pm

Isn’t it time to be intelligent about how your emotions affect you and your quality of life?

Naseem Jivraj, in collaboration with the Women’s Activities Portfolio, will be running introductory sessions on emotional intelligence and how it is the key to both personal and professional success.

The first step towards a healthier lifestyle is to know what you are putting in your body, and its positive or negative impact. During the ESF weekend, the Aga Khan Health Board in collaboration with the Ismaili Nutrition Centre will aim to keep you informed about the nutritional content of the food that is being served.

There will be healthy eating tips around the dining areas, and other eye catching graphics with key messages such as what to eat to keep energy levels up during a full day of sports.
